Yamei Yu is well established as a versatile soloist, a passioned chamber musician and concertmaster, and a committed violin teacher. Born in China, Yamei Yu studied at the central conservatory of music in Beijing and with Gottfried Schneider and Christoph Poppen. She took part in masterclasses with Ulf Hoelscher, Miriam Fried, Ruggiero Ricci and Dénes Zsigmondy. Prizes at international competitions (including Louis Spohr Competition in Freiburg and ARD International Music Competition in Munich) formed the basis of her international career.
Yamei Yu has performed at Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Philharmonic Society Bilbao, Berliner Philharmonie, Schauspielhaus in Berlin, Herkulessaal in Munich, Konzerthaus in Vienna, Wigmore Hall London, Auditorio Nacional de Música de Madrid and Valencia. She appeared at international festivals such as Berliner Festwochen, Richard Strauss Festival Garmisch Partenkirchen, Schubertiade Schwarzenberg and Figueres/Barcelona, Roskilde (Danmark), Leipziger Bachfest, Stuttgarter Bachwochen, Ludwigsburger Festspiele, Mecklenburg- Vorpommern Musik Festival, Festival van Vlaanderen, Stavanger chamber music festival, Oslo Kammermusikkfestival, Festival Crete Senesi/Italy, Rheingau Musikfestival, Salzburger Festspiele, Ravinia Festival Chicago. She collaborated globally with musicians as Shmuel Ashkenasi, Yuri Bashmet, Claudio Bohórquez, Milana Chernyavskaya, Ralf Gothoni, Maria Graf, Anna Gourari, Ulf Hoelscher, Eugène Istomin, Gidon Kremer, Kolja Lessing, Jens Peter Maintz, Boris Pergamenschikow, Gustav Rivinius, Hartmut Rohde, Michael Sanderling, Hariolf Schlichtig, Radovan Vlatkovic, Jörg Widmann and appeared together with the Berliner Solistenoktett, Minguet Quartett, Rosamunde Streichquartett, Leipziger Streichquartett and Vermeer Streichquartett. Yamei Yu was violinist of the Piano Trio “Trio Parnasssus”. For her recordings she received renowned prizes such as “Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik“ and “Klassik Echo“. Yamei Yu was principal concertmaster of the Komische Oper Berlin and of the the Bavarian State Opera Munich. Since 2009 she holds a chair as professor for violin at the Robert Schumann Hochschule Düsseldorf. She is frequently leading international master classes in Europe and Asia.
