First Round

a) one fantasy by Telemann or one baroque solo sonata by Geminiani, Westhoff or Pisendel

c) one work for violin and piano of your choice, maximum 15 minutes

Second Round

a) one movement of a sonatina or sonata by Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Dvorák, Sibelius or Grieg

b) one movement of a violin concerto by Mozart (D major KV 211, D major KV 218, A major KV 219), Spohr (No. 7 in E minor), Viotti, Rode, Beriot, Mendelssohn Bartholdy (E minor) or Wieniawski (D minor)

c) one virtuosic work for solo violin or violin and piano of your choice, maximum 15 minutes

Finale

one violin concerto by Mozart (D major KV 211, D major KV 218, A major KV 219), Spohr (No. 7 in E minor), Mendelssohn Bartholdy (E minor) or Wieniawski (D minor)

Category II

First Round

a) one baroque sonata with piano

b) one caprice by Wieniawski (op. 10 or op. 18) or by Paganini

c) one late romantic or modern work for solo violin (eg. Ysaye) or violin and piano (eg. Szymanowski, Schönberg-Fantasie) of your choice, maximum 15 minutes

Second Round

a) first movement of a sonata by Mozart, Beethoven (except C minor and Kreutzer-Sonata) or Schubert

b) first movement of the violin concerto by Wieniawski (D minor), Mendelssohn Bartholdy (E minor), Tchaikowsky, Sibelius or Spohr (No. 8 in A minor, complete)

c) one virtuosic work for solo violin or violin and piano of your choice, maximum 15 minutes

Finale

Second Round

a) the first two movements of a Sonata by J. S. Bach (G minor BWV 1001, A minor BWV 1003 or C major BWV 1005)

b) first movement of a violin concerto by Mendelssohn Bartholdy (E minor), Wieniawski (D minor), Spohr (No. 8 in A minor complete), Tchaikowsky, Brahms or Sibelius

c) one virtuosic work for solo violin or violin and piano of your choice, maximum 15 minutes

Participation Rules

  1. The Competition is open to young violinists of all nationalities. Participants will be organized according to their age on October 28, 2001.

  2. The competition will take place in three rounds in all categories. Prize winners playing in the final prizewinners concert will have the opportunity to perform with the internationally renowned Staatskapelle Weimar.

  3. All works must be performed memorized and without repeats.

  4. Official piano accompanists will be available free of charge for the competi-tion. Participants bringing a private accompanist, must cover the costs themselves.

  5. The decisions of the jury are legally final.

  6. The jury reserves the right to call off the performance.

  7. The competition is open to the public in all three rounds (concert attire is required).

  8. Participants must pay for hotel and travel costs themselves. East-european participants may apply for a subsidy for these costs. No one is automatically enti-tled to receive a subsidy.

  9. The competition will cover accommodation costs for those candidates who have reached the second round (from then onward), to a maximum of 50,— DM per person per day. This offer does not include accommodation costs for private piano accompanists or travel partners.

  10. The prizewinners are commited to perform in competition related concerts without pay. The organizer may record parts of the competition. Yet competitors have no recording rights whatsoever. Prize winners must also accept their prize in person.

  11. At registration, competitors must agree to the complete regulations and terms of the competition.

  12. In cases of doubt, the German text of this invitation is legally binding.
