Kerstin Behnke & Andreas Hetmanek - Embodied Expression

The Body as Source and Medium of Artistic Expressiveness

21 - 24 July 2022

Unfortunately, this workshop had to be cancelled.

Professor Kerstin Behnke and Dr. Andreas Hetmanek developed the concept of Embodied Expression together and founded the Embodied Expression Institute in Munich. They work in the transitional area between musical-artistic and physical-performative presentation. Together they develop free concert concepts in which the connection between music and body plays a central role. Kerstin Behnke is the director of via-nova-choir Munich and has worked with ensembles such as the RIAS Chamber Choir, the KonzerthausOrchester Berlin and the New Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. She is professor of choral and ensemble conducting at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar. Andreas Hetmanek is an empirical scientist, philosopher, psychologist and educator. He is a trained Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner, a body-oriented trauma therapy approach according to Peter Levine, hero's journey leader and works in his own practice in Munich.

Beginning of the master class: 21 July 2022, 4 pm
Course languages: German, English

This workshop is dedicated to the "magical" dimension of musical performance: individual artistic expression. This arises from making music in the greatest possible harmony with oneself, a feeling of security, devotion to the work and in a free creation from the inner cosmos of emotions, sensations and experiences that is difficult to grasp in language. Embodied Expression prepares the ground for fulfilling and fear-free music-making, in which individual artistic expression can blossom.
The focus is on one's own body as a storehouse of individual experiences with all its potential. By linking, combining and merging established methods of musical-technical practice and mindful body-oriented self-awareness, Professor Kerstin Behnke and Dr. Andreas Hetmanek develop concrete forms of practice together with the participants that have a direct impact on artistic expression. In this work, the inspiring interaction of work on artistic expression and technical-interpretational challenges can also be experienced. Fulfilled artistic expression becomes an object of daily practice - concretely formable and shapeable.

The workshop is aimed at instrumentalists, singers and conductors. A work that has already been worked on must be brought along. Very good language skills in German or English are a necessary prerequisite.
