Barbara Westphal | Viola

19 – 25 July 2025

Barbara Westphal studied in London and New York and gained further experience under Itzhak Perlman and Michael Tree (Guarneri Quartet). In 1983 she won first prize in the ARD competition for solo viola as well as the Busch Prize. She performs worldwide as a soloist and chamber musician. From 1978 to 1985 she was the violist of the Delos Quartet (USA), with whom she performed internationally and made many CD and radio recordings. She is a regular guest at international festivals such as Santa Fe (New Mexico), Sarasota (Florida), Great Lakes Festival (Michigan), Incontri in Terra di Siena and the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival. Her recording of the Brahms sonatas with pianist Ursula Oppens (Bridge Records) received high praise. Her recording of the Reger sonatas with pianist Jeffrey Swann (Bridge Records) also received top marks in the press. In 2000, her recording of the six suites by Johann Sebastian Bach was released. This was followed in 2001 by an album with Jeffrey Swann featuring works by Rebecca Clarke, Henri Vieuxtemps and Georges Enesco, in 2002 by a trio CD with works by Mozart and Beethoven (Helicon) and by further recordings of a diverse repertoire that also includes works dedicated to her personally. In 1997, Barbara Westphal, together with violinist Ani Kavafian and cellist Gustav Rivinius, founded the Trio da Salò, which immediately celebrated great success at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival. Since 2009 she has also performed with colleagues Anke Dill, Ulf Schneider, Volker Jacobsen and Gustav Rivinius in the Bartholdy Quintet. As a sought-after teacher, Barbara Westphal held the professorship for viola at the Music university in Lübeck from 1989 to 2019. Many prizewinners of international competitions emerged from her class. Her alumni are engaged as soloists and members of first-class orchestras in Germany and abroad and have been appointed to W3 professorships at German Music universities. Barbara Westphal regularly gives masterclasses in Europe and the USA and serves as a juror at important competitions.
