Welcome to the recording studio of the University of Music

The Music university has extensive technical equipment for the production of digital sound and image media:

  • Sound studio in the Fürstenhaus (main studio)
  • Project studio in the Palais
  • Project studio at the Horn
  • Sound engineering at the studio theatre Belvedere

IMPORTANT: Please do not send informal appointment requests to individual staff members. We will only process your request once we have received the fully completed application for studio/media production via email at tonstudio(at)hfm-weimar.de.

In our studios, there are generally two categories of productions: simple, straightforward demo recordings of audio and video (“studio production”) and more complex projects intended for publication on our online channels (“media production”).

Studio Productions for Students (Demo)

Students have the opportunity to make supervised audio and video recordings under professional conditions (for competition entries, auditions, demo purposes, etc.) in select university studios. This service is currently available at the Fürstenhaus Studio and the Horn Studio (for jazz and pop recordings).

To schedule a recording session, you must first submit a written application for studio production (PDF, German) and send the fully completed form to tonstudio(at)hfm-weimar.de.

The studio team will then contact you to schedule an appointment. Capacity is limited, so we ask that you plan well in advance.
 

Media productions from outstanding university projects

Our YouTube channel serves as the university’s “audio business card,” showcasing selected media productions from outstanding university projects to an international audience. The Vice President for Practical Training is responsible for the content.

If a media production is requested, the request should generally not be submitted through the studio team but rather through the office of the Vice President for Practice using the Media Production Application (PDF, German) with sufficient lead time before the desired production date: mailto:vizepraxis(at)hfm-weimar.de.

The decision on whether a media production can be carried out is made by the Vice President in consultation with the head of the sound studio after clarifying the production conditions as well as copyright and usage rights based on the following criteria:

• Benefit to students and the university’s public image

• Capacities of the staff in the sound studio and other parties involved, e.g., the Events Office, event technology, and media technology

• Review of rights and costs/funding

FAQs

What are the terms for a demo recording in our studios?
Recording in our studios is free of charge for students of the FRANZ LISZT University of Music in Weimar. For ensembles, the majority of members must be students of the university. The ancillary copyrights and exploitation rights to the recordings produced remain entirely with the FRANZ LISZT University of Music in Weimar.

Can the recordings be used for commercial releases?
All recordings are approved for non-commercial and private use.

Commercial release of the recordings on streaming platforms (e.g., Spotify, Apple Music, etc.) is not permitted. By using the studio services, the student consents to the transfer of neighboring rights and exploitation rights to the FRANZ LISZT University of Music in Weimar. The university is thus the holder of the neighboring rights and exploitation rights.

Can I have the studio team record my bachelor’s, master’s, diploma concert, or concert exam?
(Graduation) concerts and class recitals are generally not recorded by the recording studio. Exceptions are concerts of special significance to the University of Music or of particular archival value. The decision regarding a recording is made by the Vice President for Professional Practice. For the recording of concerts and class recitals, selected concert and rehearsal rooms are equipped with systems that allow for independent audio and video recording of such events.

How can I schedule a studio appointment?
To schedule a recording session, you must first submit a written application for studio production (PDF, German) and send the fully completed form to tonstudio(at)uni-weimar.de. For organizational reasons, our team will not respond to inquiries about available dates and capacity via email or phone until the corresponding application has been received.

Equipment

Fürstenhaus Studio

Fürstenhaus, Rooms 209 & 211

Our main studio at the Fürstenhaus consists of a recording room of approximately 45 square meters with separate booths for drums, bass, or vocals and a connection to the Festsaal Fürstenhaus for larger ensembles. This is where most of our demo recordings, jazz and pop productions, and livestreams take place. The recording room is ideal for soloists, smaller ensembles, chamber music, or voice recordings, while the ballroom accommodates productions, concert recordings, and livestreams by larger ensembles. The building also houses a spacious control room with high-quality audio and video equipment, as well as additional spaces for the post-production of our projects.
 

Studio Horn

HZH, Room 114

Studio am Horn is a project studio primarily used for jazz and pop audio productions. At its heart is a control room with a directly connected recording booth, which can be linked to the jazz ensemble room and other spaces in the building as needed. This makes it possible to record larger ensembles here as well. After receiving an introduction from our studio team, students can use Studio am Horn independently and flexibly for recording or post-production of student projects.
 

Studio Palais

Am Palais, Room 212

The Studio am Palais is currently undergoing renovation. Thanks to its connection to the Saal Am Palais—with its excellent acoustics and permanently installed organ—this space will in the future enable high-quality audio productions and recordings of special concerts in the fields of chamber music, church music, and school music. Following an orientation by our studio team, this studio will also be available to our students as a flexible project studio.
 

Belvedere Studio Theater

Belvedere, Wagnerhaus

The Belvedere Studio Theater is currently being expanded. In addition to simple video recordings of staged rehearsals or performances organized independently by students, larger musical theater projects are staged and publicly performed here. In the future, special staged or musical projects will also be recorded and produced here upon request.
