Nora Chastain | Violin

Born in California, the violinist studied with Dorothy DeLay at the Cincinnati Conservatory and at the Juilliard School in New York. She completed her artistic training in Europe with Yehudi Menuhin, Sandor Vegh, Alberto Lysy, and Ana Chumachenko. Important chamber music teachers were Josef Gingold and Walter Levin. Since her solo debut with Barber's Violin Concerto, which she gave in Berlin at the age of 16, she has been a guest on renowned concert stages at home and abroad.
As a soloist, Nora Chastain has received invitations from international orchestras such as the Orchestre de Paris, the Bern Symphony Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, the Cincinnati Philharmonic, the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, the Orquestra Nacional do Porto, the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra, the MDR Symphony Orchestra, and the Frankfurt Opera and Museum Orchestra. The conductors she has worked with include Yehudi Menuhin, José Serebrier, David Stern, Peter Leonhard, Marc Tardue, Michael Sanderling, and Sebastian Weigle.
Concerts as a founding member of the Menuhin Festival Piano Quartet, the Trio Kreisleriana, and with her duo partner Friedemann Rieger have taken her to the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the Ludwigsburg Castle Festival, the Schwetzingen Festival, the Menuhin Festival Gstaad, the music capitals of Europe, and to New York, Washington, Sydney, and Los Angeles. She maintains chamber music partnerships with Sharon Kam, Joshua Bell, David Geringas, Michael Sanderling, Pascal Devoyon, and members of the Fauré, Merel, and Carmina quartets.
She is professor of violin at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK) and at the Zurich University of the Arts. Until 2004, she held a professorship at the Lübeck Music university. Nora Chastain regularly gives masterclasses in Europe and America and serves as a juror at international violin competitions.
