Lilya Zilberstein enjoyed her first international success in 1987 when she won the Busoni Competition in Bolzano. By 1988, the Moscow-born pianist was already undertaking major tours of Western countries. Her concert tours took her to almost every European country, as well as Mexico, Japan, Korea, Canada, and Brazil. In 1990, she emigrated to Germany. In 1991, Lilya Zilberstein made her debut with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under Claudio Abbado, laying the foundation for repeated collaborations.
She has performed with the most renowned international orchestras, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra Moscow, the London Symphony and Royal Philharmonic Orchestras, the Orchestra of La Scala Milan, the Staatskapelle Dresden, and many others. In addition to Claudio Abbado, she has worked with conductors such as John Axelrod, Paavo Berglund, Semyon Bychkov, Gustavo Dudamel, Christoph Eschenbach, James Levine, Michael Tilson Thomas, Jean-Pascal Tortelier, Marcello Viotti, and Antoni Wit.
Lilya Zilberstein is a regular guest at major concert halls and festivals throughout Europe, the US, Canada, Asia, South America, and the Middle East. Several years ago, she toured the world several times as a chamber music partner of Maxim Vengerov. Her duo with Martha Argerich celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary on stage in 2024.
Lilya Zilberstein is a jury member at major international piano competitions, including The Cliburn Piano Competition in Fort Worth, the Busoni Competition in Bolzano, the Enescu Competition, and the Concours Reine Elisabeth in Brussels. She devotes much of her time to training young musicians. She gives masterclasses at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena (since 2011) and during her concert tours at universities and conservatories around the world. From 2009 to 2013, she was a visiting professor at the University of Music and Theater Hamburg. Since 2014, she has been a professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.
