Jean-Louis Capezzali | Oboe

21 - 26 July 2025

The Frenchman Jean-Louis Capezzali is a luminary in the practice and pedagogy of his instrument. At the age of 20, he became the first principal oboist of the ‘Concerts Lamoureux’, followed in 1984 by his appointment as first principal oboist of the renowned Orchestra philharmonique de Radio France. He is also a prizewinner at the international competitions in Geneva (1982) and Prague (1986). Born in Saint-Étienne (France), Capezzali initially took piano lessons at the age of nine. At the age of 14, he discovered the oboe for himself when he heard a recording of Vivaldi's concertos by Pierre Pierlot. After a brief period of study at the Schola Cantorum in Paris, he enrolled in the ‘Classes à horaires aménagé musique’ (CHAM) at the Conseil National de la Refondation (CNR) in Versailles, where he studied oboe with Gaston Longatte. In 1988, he took over the position of assistant to Maurice Bourgue at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse in Paris, and later succeeded him as a full professor when he moved to the Geneva Conservatory. Since 1998, he has taught at the Conservatoire National Supérieur in Lyon, where he is also responsible for the pedagogical direction of the woodwind department. Jean-Louis Capezzali is also professor of oboe at the Haute École de Musique at the Lausanne Conservatory. Each year, he also leads masterclasses in instrumental practice and chamber music at the Britten School and the Institut Supérieur de Musique de Périgueux, and trains the next generation of oboists at international academies such as Telč in the Czech Republic, Musicalp à Courchevel and the Pablo Casals Festival in Prades. Alongside these activities, his career as a soloist takes him to perform with major ensembles such as the Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine, the Orchestre de chambre de Paris, the Orchestre de chambre de Toulouse, etc. He is regularly invited to give concerts and masterclasses in China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Scandinavia, Russia, Germany, Spain, Poland, the Czech Republic and the United States, where he represents the French wind school. website
