B.A. course in Musicology

The degree is composed of two subjects, with one selected as a core subject and one as a supplementary subject. As a core subject, Musicology can be combined with the supplementary subjects of Intercultural Music and Events Management, with Music Performance or with the BA supplementary subjects offered by the Faculty of Philosophy at FSU Jena. However, Musicology can also be studied as a supplementary subject alongside a core subject from FSU Jena. The standard period of study is six semesters. The bachelor’s subjects on offer culminate in the academic degree of ‘Bachelor of Arts’ (B.A.).

Following on from the bachelor’s degree, the Department of Musicology Weimar-Jena offers two-year Master’s degree courses: the M.A. in Musicology, the M.A. in Arts Management and the M.Mus. in Music Theory.

::: ‘Studying Musicology in Weimar-Jena’ flyer :::

As it provides underlying knowledge, Musicology at B.A. level is a suitable subject for all courses within the broader field of cultural and behavioural studies, but it is also a logical addition to some scientific and theological courses.

Musicology as a core subject

The objective of the B.A. in Musicology is to enable students to understand the historically and systematically complex subject of music in an academic manner and be able to research music from interdisciplinary and cultural study perspectives. The degree provides a basic knowledge of HistoricalMusicology and is supplemented by insight into Systematic Musicology, Transcultural Music Studies and the History of Jazz and Popular Music. Alongside an overview of European musical history, the course revolves around dealing with the subject’s specific techniques, methods and questions, as a historical, interpretation-driven discipline.

The content of the B.A. course in Musicology is primarily drawn from the subject of Musicology and the specialist disciplines involved in the supplementary subject, or in the General Key Qualifications module – medieval studies, history of art, history, German literature, romance studies, ethnology/cultural history, sociology, psychology and philosophy are firm components of this kind of interdisciplinaryunderstanding of the subject. The teaching staff and organisers involved in the course are highly skilled, which in turn guarantees that content is adapted and optimised on an ongoing basis, to take into account current research and professional practice. As part of a degree oriented towards the humanities, it includes an array of content from research and cultural projects.

In addition to offering targeted preparation for the Master’s degree, the B.A. degree in Musicology is also a perfect professional qualification for a career with an academic publisher and in the media (radio, TV, press etc.), at opera houses, or at festivals. The B.A. course within the Department of Musicology Weimar-Jena meets this twin objective by providing a solid grounding in musicology thanks to specialist modules, paired with an education focused on specialistskills and practicalprofessionalcompetence, which is logically supplemented by solo and group teaching, as well as internships. The unique combination of university-based education with a university of music contributes to creating specialisations that are relevant, both to the market and academia, thereby giving students peerless career opportunities in the world of music.

Information about individual supplementary subjects from FSU Jena is included in the ‘B.A. Supplementary Subjects’ brochure from FSU Jena. More detailed information about the content, application deadlines and application process for the course in question can be obtained from the relevant departments at FSU Jena.

Music Performance as a supplementary subject

The supplementary subject of Music Performance is studied alongside the core subject of Musicology. This combination of artistic, practical and academic teaching content is what makes the Weimar Department unique, as it offers a synthesis of education from a university and a university of music, which is not to be found anywhere else in Germany.
Artistic education revolves around solo music-making and collaboration within vocal/instrumental ensembles (Weimar University Choir, Chamber Choir, Collegium Musicum, Big Band). The aim is to accomplish extensive artistic development in the major subject (instrument or singing). Piano, singing (if not the major subject) and professional piano playing are key additions to the degree. Furthermore, the subject of Choral Conducting teaches conducting techniques, while the Vocal Training subject teaches a conscious approach to using one's own voice.
Alongside offering an entryway into an artistic or academic career, a degree in Musicology/Music Performance is also of benefit for work in associations related to music, in universities of music and art, and in some sectors of the media. The dual qualification offered by the degree is even of benefit in the theatrical sphere (dramaturgy).
Applicants for Music Performance as a supplementary subject need to do a separate audition/qualification exam. The supplementary subject of Music Performance is offered by the Department of School Music and Church Music.

Musicology as a supplementary subject

As a subject that provides underlying knowledge, the supplementary B.A. subject of musicology is suitable for every core subject in the broader field of cultural and behavioural studies but, it is also a logical addition to some scientific and theological courses.
Fundamental knowledge of the specialist field of historical musicology represents a particular focus of the teaching, along with questions and methods relating to the subject as a historic, interpretative discipline. In addition to this, an awareness of questions of aesthetics, systematics and ethnology is sharpened, as is an awareness of a reflective approach to music as a phenomenon. This occurs alongside preparatory courses, such as an insight into philological working techniques, or issues relating to performance practice. This embraces interfaces with artistic practice, including jazz and popular music (or world music), which are included within the degree through the special Weimar profile in the History of Jazz and Popular Music, as well as Transcultural Music Studies.

As a result, the supplementary subject of musicology opens up an expanded range of career options, including in the media, events, therapeutic or scientific applications and philosophical roles.

Artistic and academic specialisation within the core subject of Musicology

In the core subject of musicology, prospective applicants can choose between the specialisation modules of ‘Artistic Practice’ (Module BA MuWi 12 A) and ‘Academic Methods’ (Module BA MuWi 12 B).

The 'Artistic Practice' specialisation module provides students with piano tuition over the course of four semesters. It also includes participation in a vocal/instrumental ensemble and the choice between exercises in score-reading and score notation.

The specialisation module in ‘Academic Methods’ gives students more in-depth insights into the techniques and methods of musicological work. Module 12 B includes a seminar on sources, a seminar on methods of musicology, and an exercise on the techniques of academic writing.

The module plan and description for the Module 12A and 12B specialisation option, can be found here.
