Project description

The ‘Neudeutsche Schule’, whose foremost protagonists are thought to have been Berlioz, Wagner, and Liszt, represented the nodal point of a paradigm shift that became effective in many ways in the nineteenth century—not only in music history, but also in the broader realm of European cultural history. In a manner hitherto unknown, music-aesthetic issues concerning the constructed nature of history, the relationship between music and society, as well as the societal role of musicians and the possibilities for their adequate institutionalisation were discussed in relation to each other and brought together into large-scale utopian programmes. The present research project set out to scrutinise the context of this highly complex phenomenon and to document and comment on it critically in a comprehensive edition of the relevant sources. As a result, the music-historical commonplace of the ‘Neudeutsche Schule’ can and must be seen in new light.
