Valentin Erben | Violoncello & Chamber Music

24 - 28 July 2023

To find the roots of this Viennese musician, one would have to travel to Bohemia, Slovenia, Transylvania, and even the Netherlands. His father, a music-loving physicist, and his mother, a professional pianist, taught their son not to go a day without music. In 1967 Valentin, then a cello student in Paris, was awarded the “Premier Prix du Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique”. After studying in Munich and Paris, the Alban Berg Quartet was founded – a fated and successful union of four musicians which would shape the international string quartet scene for nearly 40 years.  The quartet performed all over the world and received over 30 awards for its records and CDs. Valentin Erben taught at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna for just as long, until his retirement in 2013. Between 2004 and 2007 Valentin Erben was also a member of the des Lucerne Festival Orchestra conducted by Claudio Abbado. He plays the famous violoncello made by Matteo Goffriller in 1722, which bears the nicknames “Ex – Pierre Fournier” and “Ex – Yoyo Ma”. The instrument was kindly loaned to him by The Merito String Instruments Trust Ltd.
