Tertiary Training and Research Institute
Weimar hosts the only university of music in Thuringia. It views itself to be a tertiary training and research institution and follows the principles of Humbold’s ideal of wholistic education.
The idea of an orchestra school, formulated by Franz Liszt in the 19th century, is still the lived practice at the university today. It enables us to offer a diverse education with the aim of training self-sufficient personalities, who are able to think and act with reflection.
The result is an organisational structure which manifests in three equal pillars of musical practice, teaching, and research in order to integrate all areas of music with a practical orientation.
The university is organised as three faculties which host a total of ten departments. In addition, there is also The Centre of Music Theory and the Studio for Electro-Acoustic Music (SeaM).
The University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar offers combined degrees with the Bauhaus University Weimar and the Friedrich Schiller University Jena.
We also work with theatres, orchestras and various musical institutions in Thuringia and so support the next generation of musicians in diverse ways. This is particularly noticeable with the university’s gifted programme at the specialised Music High School Schloss Belvedere.
The focus is set on the connection between different areas of training which is lived through interdisciplinary classes and numerous student projects.
The University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar offers degrees in artistic, academic, and pedagogical areas, including:
- Bachelor and Master of Music
- Concert exam
- Graduate Diploma of Church Music
- Certificate: Thuringian Opera Studio
- Bachelor und Master of Education
- State Exam
- Bachelor and Master of Arts
- Doctoral and Postdoctoral degrees
Close student supervision and support is assured through individual and small-group classes.
