Music in a Divided World

77th Annual Conference of the »Gesellschaft für Musikforschung«

The University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar is organizing the "GfM" Annual Conference 2025 from 6 to 9 October on the topic of “Music in a Divided World”.

In a time that is perceived as politically, economically and culturally crisis-ridden, the conference is dedicated to contrasts and polarizations that are not unfamiliar to the world of music:
U vs. E, new vs. old, West vs. East, Wagner vs. Brahms, Nordic profundity vs. southern lightness, secular vs. sacred etc.

Within the framework of the overarching theme of a musically divided world, the aim is to examine how music makes both dividing lines and bridges in different societies and epochs tangible and negotiable in terms of sound.

The two main symposia of the conference will deal with the topic of “Music in a divided world” from different perspectives.
