- Born in 1958 in Siegen (NRW)
- After his A' levels and community service he studied musicology, old and new German literature as well as pedagogy in Kiel
- 1989 PhD Kiel
- 1988-1994 Director of a music school
- 1992 academic member of staff and between 1994 and 2000 academic assistant at the Institute of Musicology at the Kiel University
- Following his postdoctoral lecturing qualification in 2000 he became a private teacher in Kiel until 2004
- Since October 2004 he has been a professor at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar
- 2009-2013 Vice president, teaching and research at the LISZT University
