Uroš Rojko | Improvisation - Composition - Clarinet

Uroš Rojko was born in 1954 in Ljubljana, Slovenia. After studying clarinet and then composition at the Academy of Music in Ljubljana, he continued his compositional training at the music academies in Freiburg and Hamburg. He has received numerous international awards. These include the Förderpreis der Stadt Stuttgart, the Alban Berg Prize in Vienna, the Premio Europa in Rome, the Gaudeamus Prize Amsterdam, the Musikprotokoll Graz and the "Vienna International Composition Prize 1991". As part of this award, his first prize-winning composition "Inner Voices" was performed at the "Wien Modern" festival by the Vienna Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Claudio Abbado. In 2001, Uroš Rojko received the Composition Prize of the German Choir Competition of the German Music Council in Bonn. In his home country, he has been honoured with the Prešeren Culture Prize and the Culture Prize of the Slovenian Composers' Association, among others. He was composer in residence at the Künstlerhof Schreyahn, in London and in New York. His works have been performed in Europe, America, Canada, Australia, Japan and China. Rojko lives and works between Berlin and Ljubljana. He is Professor Emeritus of Composition and Music Theory at the Ljubljana Academy of Music and a member of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts. As a clarinettist, he mainly devotes himself to the performance of contemporary compositions, mostly in duo with the Slovenian accordionist Luka Juhart.

Course: open to soloists and/or ensembles

Playing - researching - experimenting: Luka Juhart and Uroš Rojko look at their profession from a universal perspective in search of the expression of versatile artistic possibilities. What drives the artist in people? They formulate their answers from their in-depth knowledge of their subject with an open mind.
Both courses are organised on a modular basis: The participants decide on the content. This includes Classical instrumental or composition lessons both as soloists and in ensembles, improvisation lessons, an experimental laboratory, etc. Joint group lessons are encouraged, as are prepared compositions by Luka Juhart and Uroš Rojko.
