Portfolio of programmes

The Department of Musicology Weimar-Jena offers a modularised system of courses, allowing for a wide range of possible combinations within the areas of musicology, arts management, and music theory. The undergraduate programmes available at the department (normal duration: three years) all lead to the degree of Bachelor of Arts (B.A.). They are designed as so-called two-major programmes (Zwei-Fach-Studiengang), which consist of a major subject in combination with a minor subject. Musicology can be elected as a major or minor subject; further minor subjects include intercultural music and events management, music performance, as well as minor subjects offered at the Humanities Division (Philosophische Fakultät) at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena.

The B.A. programmes can be followed with two-year graduate programmes in musicology or arts management, leading to a Master of Arts (M.A.) degree. These programmes either focus on a specific sub-field of the discipline (Master's programmewith specialisation), or they consider a topic from a range of different perspectives (interdisciplinary Master's programme).

Music theory may be studied after having obtained a Bachelor's, Master's, or diploma degree in any performance or academic programme; the graduate programme in music theory leads to a Master of Music (M.Mus.) degree. The programme is also modularised, i. e. music theory may be studied as a major subject, in combination with another subject (e. g. musicology, arts management, and/or performance), or as a specialisation in any M.Mus. programme.
