Get Ready - Career Service of the university

The Get Ready series is designed to prepare students specifically for the demands of professional life. The focus is on teaching communicative, organisational, legal and managerial skills. The aim is to reflect on the many opportunities, special features and difficulties of starting a career as a musician/manager/music educator. Get Ready complements the curriculum and is open to students of all disciplines and all other members of the university.

Voices from participants:

"There was a lot of talk about posture and body dynamics. Things that affect a musician on a daily basis. I have incorporated this influence directly into my practice and find it extremely helpful."
Viola student Maike Brümmer on the workshop "Relaxed on stage! Practising techniques and reducing stage fright" by Pete Josephs

"We learnt a lot of useful things for the future in the seminars, especially in terms of marketing and tax returns."Recorder student Jan Fuß on the seminar "Tax Law" by Patrick Gertis

The programme

Mental Training & Conflict Management | Matthias Frieling

The job interview for orchestral musicians is the audition. And here, too, a decision is made within a few minutes as to whether someone is considered suitable or not. The anxiety and expectations are correspondingly high. You practise for this moment for decades. And then everything has to work out. How do you manage to stay so focussed? How can you control your stage fright? And how can you keep yourself motivated despite various failures?

And then comes the moment when you finally have a position in the orchestra, but are now under scrutiny for a year. How do you withstand this pressure? How do you fulfil the various demands? And what are you actually allowed to do and what not?

We want to look at all these questions from different angles. There are no recipes, but perhaps there are solutions that are worth trying out.

Part I: Study and preparation (practise, reflect, synchronise)

⇒ What methods do I know for practising and which do I use?

⇒ How do I deal with criticism and when do I know that I am well prepared?

⇒ How much routine and how much spontaneity do I need for a good presentation?

Part II: Audition and rehearsal year (performing, focussing, communicating)

⇒ How can I prepare myself mentally for the audition?

⇒ What is my "safe place" on stage and how do I get to it?

⇒ How do I communicate with other people and how do I set boundaries?

The workshop parts build on each other.

Tax law | Dieter B. Simon

How does the tax return work? Artists also have to pay taxes and therefore submit a tax return, which you have to complete yourself if you don't have a tax consultant. In this event, Dieter B. Simon will use practical examples to explain that you can complete a tax return yourself with your own background knowledge. So if you have ever wondered how to fill in your tax return, whether it is worthwhile for you as a student to submit a tax return and/or have other questions about tax returns or tax in general, this is the right event for you!

The seminar is aimed at students of the University of Music and Bauhaus University.

Sat, 20 April 2024 | 10:00 am - 1:00 pm | University Centre at the Horn, Seminar Room 1

Scholarships & project funding | Dr Ina Roß

Every artist and creative faces the question in their career: How can I finance myself and my work? How can I best prepare for successful funding acquisition in good time?

The workshop first provides an overview of the funding landscape and its utilisation possibilities and shows the various options for your own funding. Public funding programmes, grants, prizes and corporate sponsorship of projects will be covered, as well as new digital funding formats. Participants will then learn about the special features of various funding providers and practise preparing applications and cost and financing plans in practice. Above all, the workshop is very practically orientated and is intended to provide initial guidance on the path to a financially secure artistic career.

Contents:

⇒ Overview of the funding landscape for artists and creatives

⇒ What needs to be considered when approaching funders?

⇒ Advantages and challenges of new digital funding formats

⇒ How do I create an application with a cost and financing plan?

⇒ What are the advantages of collecting societies?
