Thorsten Johanns - Clarinet

21 - 27 July 2021

As a sought-after soloist and committed ensemble musician, Thorsten Johanns gives concerts as solo clarinetist and as part of numerous chamber music formations in renowned concert halls and festivals all over the world. In his more than twenty yearlong musical career he has worked with conductors such as Sir Neville Marriner, Semyon Bychkov and Howard Griffiths. Before becoming principal clarinettist of the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne in 2002 at the age of 25, he was deputy principal clarinettist of the Essen Philharmonic Orchestra for three years. Johanns was the first, and to date the only, German clarinettist to be repeatedly invited to New York by former principal conductor Alan Gilbert to play as principal clarinettist with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. His chamber music partners include ensembles such as the Auryn Quartet, the Quartetto di Cremona, the Aris Quartet and the Minguet Quartet. From 2010 to 2014 Thorsten Johanns was professor for clarinet at the Conservatory in Maastricht (Netherlands) before following his call to the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar.
