Hugo Noth - Accordion

17 - 22 July 2021

The accordionist Hugo Noth has had a significant influence on the development of his instrument through his artistic work. His aesthetics, marked by a desire to experiment, opened up new horizons again and again over the course of his eventful musical life. Born in Fribourg (Switzerland) in 1943, Hugo Noth studied accordion at the Hochschule für Musik in Trossingen with Fritz Dobler as well as composition, instrumentation and music theory with Helmut Degen and Bernhard Rövenstrunck. From 1972 onwards, he was the head of an accordion class at his alma mater for decades. Extensive concert tours and master classes have taken him throughout Europe, the USA, Canada and Latin America. He is a member of the Ensemble Itinéraire in Paris and has inspired a large number of composers to write works for accordion. In professional circles he is considered a "visionary with far-reaching questions": his questions to music move and enable new perspectives. This will be the second time that students of the Weimar Master Classes will benefit from this.

Beginning of the master class: 17.07.2021, 10:00 am
Course Languages: German, French, Italian

Course profile

Work on solo repertoire of own choice as well as joint work on Les Folies françoises, ou Les Dominos by François Couperin.

In addition to the conventional individual repertoire work, the course will include a collaborative project:
All participants are invited to engage with the composition Les Folies françoises, ou Les Dominos by François Couperin. This extraordinary suite with its twelve short movements offers the opportunity to use the subjective perception of aspects such as colour, form and tempo for a reflection on objective design criteria for an interpretation. In the lesson, which takes place daily, possible methods of interpretation are worked out collectively - exemplary for the general artistic approach to a compositional work. The sheet music material can be found here (page 16). It is recommended to prepare at least two movements of this work.
