Since the California-born violinist made her solo debut at the age of 16 with Barber's Violin Concerto in Berlin, she has performed on renowned concert stages in Germany and abroad. As a soloist, Nora Chastain has received invitations from international orchestras such as the Orchestre de Paris, the Bern Symphony Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, the Cincinnati Philharmonic, the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, the Orquestra Nacional do Porto, the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra and the mdr Sinfonieorchester Leipzig. Among the conductors with whom she has worked are Yehudi Menuhin, José Serebrier, David Stern, Peter Leonhard, Marc Tardue, Michael Sanderling and Sebastian Weigle. Nora Chastain devotes herself intensively to contemporary music. She played the European premiere of her grandfather Roy Harris' violin concerto, and several composers - including Daniel Schnyder with his violin concerto, Gerhard Samuel, Susanne Erding and Georg Wörzer - have written works for her. Her numerous recordings include sonatas by Mozart, Debussy and Fauré, all of Beethoven's sonatas, chamber music works for trio and quartets as well as Beethoven's Violin Concerto and Bartok's 2nd Violin Concerto. Nora Chastain is professor of violin at the Berlin University of the Arts and the Zurich University of the Arts. Until 2004 she held a professorship at the Lübeck University of Music. Her teaching combines the European and American traditions of violin playing from the last 50 years.
