Matthias Bäcker - Oboe

17 – 21 July 2022

Matthias Bäcker has been Professor of Oboe at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar since 2005.
Matthias Bäcker was born in Schwerin in 1971. He studied in Berlin and Leipzig and was accepted into the Orchestra Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic in 1994. At the same time he was principal oboist in the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra under Claudio Abbado and a founding member of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra.
His first permanent engagements took him as principal oboist to the Berlin Symphony Orchestra and the Mannheim National Theatre.
From 1999 to 2005 he held the same position at the Deutsche Oper Berlin under Christian Thielemann and was invited as a guest by numerous major orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic and the Bavarian State Opera in Munich.
He has won prizes at national and international competitions and performs as a soloist and chamber musician at home and abroad.
In addition to his passion for pedagogy, active music-making in the orchestra continues to be a great joy and motivation for Matthias Bäcker, which he currently experiences as principal oboist of the Camerata Salzburg and in guest engagements with renowned German orchestras.
