Bruno Britto was born in 1996 in Belém (Pará), in the Brazilian Amazon region. During his studies, he worked at the Laboratory of Ethnomusicology (LABETNO) within the Faculty of Music (FAMUS) at the Federal University of Pará (UFPA). There, he contributed to the project Music and Society in the Pan-Amazonian Region. In this context, he worked with the Warao, who migrated from Venezuela to Brazil due to political circumstances. His research included audio recordings of the Dakotutuma – dance songs of the Warao – as well as contributing to the production of the book The Life of the Warao, which was created in collaboration with Warao authors and documents the history of their flight to Belém.
He is currently a research fellow on the Resocialization of Sound project, which is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). Within this framework, he works with historical collections of the Wayana and Apalai, in particular with sound recordings and visual material from the collections of Daniel Schoepf and René Fürst. The project aims to foster a collaborative engagement with sound archives, with a focus on indigenous perspectives on sound, knowledge and archiving.
In addition, he is collaborating with the Curuaya with the aim of revitalising cultural practices through research into the collections of Emilie Snethlage. As part of this collaboration, ethical protocols for sound recordings are being discussed and developed. Furthermore, approaches to the construction of replicas of traditional instruments are being developed in order to reintegrate them into their original social and cultural context.
His research interests include ethical protocols for handling sound recordings of indigenous communities in the Amazon region, ethnomusicological archives, and the relationship between sound and ontology.
Alongside his academic work, he engages with Latin American music in various musical projects and contributes as an electric guitarist to recordings and performances.
