A Musical Start to Spring
The choir and orchestra of the Music High School Schloss Belvedere invite you to a concert
The program spans from Bach to the present day: The choir and orchestra of the Music High School Schloss Belvedere invite you to their traditional spring concert on Saturday, March 28 at 7:00 p.m. in the school’s concert hall. In addition to the familiar sounds of Johann Sebastian Bach, Franz Schubert, and Johannes Brahms, the program features contemporary music by Ola Gjeilo as well as by Aaron Ströher, a student at the school.
For several years now, Aaron Ströher has been majoring in composition—a rarity at the Music High School. Two of his works are on the program for the spring concert: The choir will sing “Wenn wir den Suchenden die Zuflucht verwehren, was für Menschen sind wir dann?” (If we deny refuge to those who seek it, what kind of people are we then?), and the orchestra will perform the composition “Mehr Tanzen?” (More Dancing?). Aaron Ströher, born in 2006, impressed the judges at last year’s national competition “Jugend komponiert” and received an award in the “Solo” category.
Under the direction of Marian Grosew, the choir will also perform Johann Sebastian Bach’s motet “Der Geist hilft unser Schwachheit auf” BWV 226, accompanied by Prof. Martin Sturm on the organ. Pianist Natalia Kravchenko, a student in Prof. Michail Lifits’s class, will perform as soloist in “Ubi Caritas” for mixed choir and piano by the Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo (*1978).
Under the direction of Prof. Joan Pagès Valls, the Music High School orchestra will present Franz Schubert’s Symphony D 759 “The Unfinished” as well as Johannes Brahms’ Hungarian Dance No. 6 in an arrangement by Martin Schmeling.
The Spring Concert is a benefit event in support of the Gemeinnützige Kinderhospiz Mitteldeutschland GmbH and takes place as part of the UNESCO project work at the Music High School Schloss Belvedere Weimar. Admission is free.
Around 120 students from all over Germany and abroad live and study at the Music High School Schloss Belvedere. The professional musical training takes place in close collaboration with the FRANZ LISZT University of Music Weimar and is led by its professors and lecturers.
In addition to instruction in music theory, music history, and rhythmics, students receive comprehensive practical training. This includes instrumental lessons, chamber music, orchestral and choral music, as well as composition, improvisation, and accompaniment.
With high artistic standards, the Music High School leads to the General University Entrance Qualification. The affiliated boarding school places special emphasis on a broad general education and supports holistic personal development.
Many graduates of the Music High School now hold leading positions in major national and international orchestras or work as faculty members at German Music universities.
