Excellent!
Germany Scholarship recipients will showcase their talents on June 7 in a diverse program
Spanning the history of music, playing every conceivable instrument, and performing in a wide variety of ensembles, the Germany Scholarship recipients from the Weimar Music university will demonstrate their artistic skills. With music ranging from Johann Sebastian Bach to Harry Belafonte, the event will feature performances and singing on Sunday, June 7 at 11:00 a.m. in the Festsaal Fürstenhaus, interspersed with short interviews and a concert introduction. Admission is free!
The colorful concert series titled “Excellent!” opens with a piano trio by Johannes Brahms, followed by a Bach toccata on the accordion and two songs from Robert Schumann’s popular cycle “Frauenliebe und -leben.” Following a musical interlude featuring Mendelssohn’s Sixth String Quartet, the song “For Good” from the musical “Wicked” by Stephen Schwartz will be performed. Other highlights include a Spohr fantasy for harp, the beautiful first movement from Beethoven’s “Spring Sonata,” and an excerpt from the sextet for two horns and strings—also composed by Ludwig van Beethoven.
In the second half of the concert, the program begins with Harry Belafonte’s song “Turn the World Around,” followed by a Scriabin piano sonata, a trio from Mozart’s opera “Così fan tutte,” and a “Memory of Mozart for solo flute,” which add further tonal colors. The concert by the Germany Scholarship recipients concludes on the accordion with Franz Liszt’s Transcendental Etude No. 4 and Pablo de Sarasate’s fiery “Navarra” for two violins and piano.
Thanks to the active support of foundations, companies, and private sponsors, a total of 42 Germany Scholarships were awarded at the University of Music Franz Liszt Weimar for the current academic year. The scholarship recipients receive 300 euros per month. The scholarships, which are funded equally by private donors and the federal government, are awarded for outstanding artistic, pedagogical, or academic achievements, or for special accomplishments. Social engagement as well as special personal and family circumstances are also taken into account in the selection process.
