Focus on voice

Cornelius Mack is the new Professor for Practical Piano Playing in Schools at the Department of Music Education and Church Music

The Department of Music Education and Church Music is receiving competent reinforcement: in succession to Prof. André Schmidt, Cornelius Mack has been appointed as the new Professor for Practical Piano Playing in Schools at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar. He will take up his post on 1 October 2023 and yesterday received his certificate of appointment from the hands of President Prof. Anne-Kathrin Lindig.

"I am delighted that Cornelius Mack, a young and multi-talented professor of school practical piano performance, is taking up his teaching position. His additional focus on 'Voice in Popular Music' further strengthens the interdisciplinarity of our department," says the Director of the Department of Music Education and Church Music, Prof. Gero Schmidt-Oberländer

"I look forward to working together with the students and the congenial faculty at this wonderful university. With four full-time lecturers in school practical piano playing and the possibility to study the subject as a major, the university occupies an extraordinary position in the training of future teachers. I would like to strengthen this profile through interdisciplinary cooperation and further advance it with regard to school practice," adds Prof. Cornelius Mack.

Cornelius Mack studied school music with piano as his main subject at the Freiburg University of Music from 2005 to 2011 with Christoph Sischka, Ralf Schmid and Helmut Lörscher, among others. During this time, he completed a nine-month study abroad programme in jazz piano as a scholarship holder of the Baden-Württemberg Foundation at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, USA.

There he received lessons from Harold Danko, Bill Dobbins and Dariusz Terefenko. Cornelius Mack then continued his studies in jazz piano at the Mannheim University of Music, where he studied with Jörg Reiter and Rainer Böhm. He completed his traineeship at the Gymnasium Schenefeld, where he subsequently worked as a music teacher.

Cornelius Mack worked as a lecturer for practical piano playing at the Musikhochschule Mainz, at the Institute for Music and its Education at the TU Braunschweig and at the Musikhochschule Freiburg. In addition, he gives workshops on band playing, practical piano playing in schools, songwriting and arranging.

As a member of the a cappella ensemble UNDUZO, in which he is active as a singer, composer and arranger, he has received numerous awards and has been involved in various CD and video productions as well as commercial recordings. Cornelius Mack has performed in various roles - as pianist, keyboardist, singer, composer and arranger - with band and musical projects throughout Europe.
