Ceremonial matriculation

University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar welcomes 172 new students from 30 countries - and awards the DAAD Prize to violinist János Mátyás Stark 

They are welcomed with open arms: The University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar welcomes 172 new students for the winter semester 2022/23. They were ceremoniously enrolled on Monday, 10 October in the Festsaal Fürstenhaus with lots of music. A total of 824 young musicians, music teachers and musicologists are currently studying in the European city of culture. 

Of the 172 newly enrolled, 137 are studying in Weimar for the first time - the others are changing from a Bachelor's to a Master's programme, for example. The 137 "first-timers" are divided into 61 German and 76 international students.

They come to Weimar from many parts of the world - including all of Europe, Albania, Moldova, Ukraine, Russia, Serbia, South Africa, the USA, Canada, Chile, Venezuela, China and South Korea.

The largest increases this time were recorded by the Department of Wind Instruments and Percussion with 33, the Department of Musicology Weimar-Jena (with Cultural Management) with 25 and the Department of Music Education and Church Music with 20 new students.

These are followed by the Department of String Instruments and Harp with 22, the Department of Piano with 16 - and the Departments of Contemporary Music and Jazz as well as for Singing | Music Theatre with 15 new students each.

The Departments of Conducting and Opera Correpetition (6), Guitar (7) and Early Music (8) also welcome new students. A total of 17 students in mobility programmes (e.g. Erasmus+) come to the Weimar University of Music from all over Europe. 

University President Prof. Anne-Kathrin Lindig and Jerry Kuhn, Chairman of the Student Council, gave the welcoming speeches at the matriculation ceremonies. A highlight of the event at 5:00 p.m. was the awarding of the Liszt Prize 2022 of the Friends of the University of Music to the accordion duo con:trust with Daniel Roth and Marius Staible from Prof. Claudia Buder's class. The prize was presented by the chairperson of the association, Prof. Ulrike Rynkowski-Neuhof.

In the second matriculation ceremony at 6:30 p.m., the prize of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD Prize 2022) was ceremoniously presented to violinist János Mátyás Stark from the class of Prof. Dr. Friedemann Eichhorn. He received the prize from the hands of Vice President Dr Jens Ewen. All those honoured expressed their gratitude with musical performances.
