The UNESCO Chair for "Transcultural Music Studies" at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar is organising an international conference on 27 and 28 October in the auditorium of the University Centre at the Horn. As part of the conference "Living Music Making Practice as Intangible Cultural Heritage", there will also be an invitation to a public concert: An Afghan ensemble will play on Friday, 27 October at 20:00 in the Great Hall of the youth and cultural centre mon ami.
Tickets at 12 euros, concessions 8 euros, are available at the Tourist Information Weimar and at the box office.
Since the rich treasure of Afghanistan's music is currently under threat, musicians living in exile continue to keep their Afghan cultural heritage alive and bring their music to European halls. They show that despite the influences of Persian, Indian and Central Asian musical culture, Afghan music also has its own character.
The international conference "Living Music Practice as Intangible Cultural Heritage" is being held in cooperation with the German National Committee of the International Council for Traditional Music (ICTMD-Germany) - and the concert will celebrate Afghanistan's living music practice in exile, in keeping with the conference theme.
Today, music and dance make up at least half of the UNESCO-listed Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This is expressed both directly through musical genres, musical instruments, etc., but also in a broader context. For music research, this central position of music in the Intangible Cultural Heritage is downright trend-setting.
The vitality of a cultural and artistic practice with the acting human being at its centre is an important theme in intangible cultural heritage, which will also accompany the annual conference of the ICTMD-Germany in Weimar.
The conference will be opened on 27 October at 12:30 by Dorit Klebe, President of ICTMD-Germany, and by Prof. Dr. Tiago de Oliveira Pinto from the UNESCO Chair for "Transcultural Music Studies" at the Department of Musicology Weimar-Jena.
