From Weimar to New York
Jazz Vocal Alumna Sabeth Pérez Teaches at the Manhattan School of Music
A few years ago, she studied jazz voice at the Weimar Music university and has since pursued an impressive career spanning continents. Sabeth Pérez is now a member of the faculty at the renowned Manhattan School of Music in New York. Together with Theo Bleckmann and Alexis Cole, the singer teaches master’s students in jazz voice as well as courses in ensemble performance and aural training.
“We are very pleased that Sabeth Pérez will be teaching at the Manhattan School of Music in the future,” says her former major instructor in Weimar, Prof. Jeff Cascaro. “It impressively confirms the international relevance of jazz education at the University of Music Weimar!” The Weimar graduate speaks highly of her former professor: “Whenever I showed musical initiative, it was rewarded with positive energy and encouragement.”
She describes “honestly communicated expectations” during her studies, for which she was offered the necessary technical and interpretive tools and inspiration. “They took the time to address each student individually. For me personally, this was exactly the right thing at the right time in preparation for a career as a musician, and I look back on my time there with gratitude,” says Sabeth Pérez.
As the daughter of the German-Argentine musician and composer Gabriel Pérez, Sabeth Pérez grew up in a musical household and was singing even before she could speak. At the age of twelve, she began performing and recording albums, and since the age of 13, she has maintained an ongoing collaboration with the WDR Big Band. Since then, she has performed with numerous major ensembles, including the Frankfurt Radio Big Band, the Uptown Jazz Tentet, and the EOS Chamber Orchestra.
Her international collaborations as a performer and composer include projects with multiple Grammy Award winners Billy Childs, Tigran Hamasyan, Keita Ogawa, Jon Cowherd, Ingrid Jensen, Lula Galvão, Theo Bleckmann, and Yasushi Nakamura. Since moving to New York City, Sabeth Pérez has continued to develop her unique musical vision, combining dynamic musicality with an unmistakable, silky-warm voice. Her album “Searching for Beauty,” released in 2025, reflects her artistic vision. Following performances at renowned New York venues such as Dizzy’s Club, the 55 Bar, and Birdland, her album-release concert at the Jazz Gallery in Manhattan was sold out.
Sabeth Pérez joins the faculty at the Manhattan School of Music with more than 15 years of teaching experience and has taught beyond New York at the California Jazz Conservatory, the Jazz-Institut Berlin, and the Folkwang University of the Arts. Her latest project, “La Adivina,” featuring the WDR Big Band, is scheduled for release in 2027.
