Fürstenhaus Open House

The University of Music celebrates its 154th anniversary—with a ceremony, cake, a bus, and lots of music

The Franz Liszt University of Music is celebrating its 154th anniversary—and the entire city of Weimar is invited to join the celebration. The “Dies Academicus” will kick off with a ceremony on Wednesday, June 24, at 11:00 a.m. in the Festsaal Fürstenhaus. In addition to plenty of music for accordion, guitar, and marimba, University Council Chair Dr. Rüdiger Nolte will deliver the commemorative address. The public is cordially invited; admission is free.

The newly formed university ensemble “Liszt Brass” will then perform at 1:15 p.m. on the Platz der Demokratie in front of the Fürstenhaus—and at the same time welcome a visually redesigned bus from Stadtwirtschaft Weimar, which will be unveiled to the public for the first time. For the next three years, the hydrogen bus named after Franz Liszt—featuring illustrations of numerous students and their instruments—will operate on various city bus routes in Weimar as a rolling symbol of both the commitment to climate protection and the community-building power of music.

Between 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., the University of Music will bring its music directly to the people. Across the city center, a diverse mix of student ensembles will perform at locations including Theaterplatz, Frauenplan, Marktplatz, and Herderplatz. At the same time, the Fürstenhaus will open its normally closed doors to the general public. Visitors can experience music—and make music themselves—there, as well as learn about the building’s long and eventful history.

The festive “Dies Academicus” concludes at 6:00 p.m. in the Festsaal Fürstenhaus with the inaugural lecture by Prof. Matthias Lewy, Professor of Transcultural Music Studies. Among the performers will be the Transcultural Choro Ensemble, conducted by Tiago Santos. Admission to the lecture is free.
