The major subject of Musicology can be combined with the minor subject of Intercultural Music and Event Management or the minor subject of Music Practice, or with a minor subject from the range offered by Friedrich Schiller University Jena.
Degree:Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) - core subjectStandard period of study:6 SemesterContent:The programme provides fundamental knowledge in historical musicology and is supplemented by insights into systematic musicology, transcultural music studies, and the history of jazz and popular music. As part of this humanities-oriented programme, numerous topics from research and cultural projects are incorporated.
Prospective students can choose between the specialisation modules ‘Artistic Practice’ and ‘Scientific Methodology’ in the core subject of musicology.
Prerequisite:General higher education entrance qualification (Abitur), passed aptitude test, proof of language level C1 (for foreign applicants)

Aptitude test period:There is no aptitude test for the core subject of musicology.
Aptitude test:There is no aptitude test; an information session is offered instead. If you choose the Artistic Practice specialisation, you will sit a module entrance examination in piano as a minor subject at the start of your degree.
If you choose Music Practice as a supplementary subject, a separate aptitude test will be held.

The supplementary subject of Musicology can only be combined with a core subject from the range offered by Friedrich Schiller University Jena.
As a subject with a strong focus on the fundamentals, it is suitable for all degree programmes within the broad field of cultural and behavioural sciences.
Degree:Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) - supplementary subjectStandard period of study:6 SemesterContent:In particular, basic knowledge in the field of historical musicology as well as questions and methods of the subject as a historical-interpretative discipline are taught. In addition to this, awareness of questions of aesthetics, systematics and ethnology as well as a reflective approach to the phenomenon of music is sharpened.

Study information:A consecutive Master’s programme, in which one half of the course is devoted to deepening students’ knowledge of the core disciplines of musicology, whilst in the other half students specialise in a specific sub-field within the subject by choosing a study profile
Degree:Master of Arts (M.A.)Standard period of study:4 SemesterContent:The programme focuses on providing a differentiated education in musicology. It imparts advanced and in-depth knowledge.

- Historical musicology
- Transcultural music studies
- History of jazz and popular music
- History of Jewish music
- Cultural management
- Music theory (with aptitude test)
- Music practice (with aptitude test)
Prerequisite:Subject-specific bachelor's or diploma degree, proof of language proficiency at level C1 (for international applicants), aptitude test passed (music theory and music practice profiles) if applicable

Prerequisite:Completed, relevant Master's degree, state examination, Master's degree or scientific diploma, with a minimum grade of ‘good’; foreign examinations are recognised if they are equivalent to a German degree.
