From the Bosporus to the Ilm

Transcultural concert project "Caravan Orchestra & Choir" with three concerts in Thuringia

The Caravan Orchestra & Choir is performing for the seventh time this year. The ensemble consists of students from the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar and the Music Department of the University of Haifa (Israel). After a joint rehearsal phase at the Music university in Weimar and concerts in Essen and Leipzig, the ensemble is now playing three concerts in Thuringia.

The public is cordially invited to the concerts on 9 August at 20:00 in the Wandelhalle in Eisenach, on 10 August at 18:30 "Open Air" on Herderplatz in Weimar under the motto "From the Bosphorus to the Ilm" and "Open Air" on 11 August at 19:00 in front of the west façade of the Old Synagogue in Erfurt.

Tickets for Eisenach and Weimar cost 20 euros, concessions 10 euros, and are available at the box offices and in advance at www.caravanorchestra.eu/appearances. This is a transcultural concert project in cooperation with the Yiddish Summer Weimar and the Other Music Academy e.V.

Jewish, Arabic and European music are part of a historical and constant international transfer of musical culture. With the Caravan Orchestra & Choir, this can be experienced by playing and singing together. The results of the rehearsals with an international team of artists are essentially based on a process of musical improvisation. The intersections and mutual influences of Greek and Turkish, Jewish and Arabic music are at the centre of Caravan 2024.

Caravan Orchestra & Choir gives students the opportunity to experience a creative exchange with cultures that are usually less familiar to them, namely Jewish, Greek, Turkish and Arabic music, through practical music-making. Musical scores or written arrangements are rarely used.

The teachers involved in the project are all internationally renowned. They work and live in Greece, Turkey, Great Britain and Germany. The overall artistic direction of Caravan Orchestra & Choir is the responsibility of Polina Shepherd (Great Britain). The artistic co-directors are Mehmet Ali Orman, clarinet (Turkey), Zoë Acqua, violin (USA) and Eftychia Mitritsa, vocals (Greece).
