MusiGeNuM joint project
Research initiative for digitally supported instrumental and vocal pedagogy
The Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences and the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar launched a research project lasting almost three years in April 2024 to explore the possibilities of digitally supported instrumental and vocal pedagogy.
The joint project ‘MusiGeNuM’ aims to develop learning scenarios and success strategies for music school work. It is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as part of the ‘Cultural Education in Social Transformations’ programme.
Music schools are a mainstay of cultural education and play an important role in social communities. In this context, MusiGeNuM aims to preserve traditions in a post-digital world while also developing innovative didactic approaches. The project combines educational research with technological innovations to precisely evaluate self-efficacy in musical learning, the efficiency of pedagogical interventions and the importance of digital literacy.
The project takes an interdisciplinary perspective that includes both music education and information technology. The professorship of Music Education and Education in the Arts at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar (Prof. Dr. Anne Fritzen) is leading the social science and subject-didactic research, while the professorship of Business and Media Informatics at the University of Applied Sciences Magdeburg-Stendal (Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael A. Herzog) is responsible for the development and investigation of digital educational technologies.
A particular focus of the project is on promoting equal opportunities and educational justice. Digital assistance systems, for example in the form of apps, are designed to make practice more autonomous and offer learners more independent learning opportunities.
In addition, eye-tracking technologies are used to research success strategies for reading sheet music and playing at sight, and to integrate these findings into the practical work of music schools.
A broad network of research, practice and testing partners is intended to ensure that the results of the MusiGeNuM project are integrated into the practice of music schools and, beyond that, into social education.
