Public conference on the change of musical life in late modern society

A public conference at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar is taking its finger on the pulse of the times. The conference on the topic "Music in late-modern society. Crises - Opportunities - Transformations" will take place from Thursday, 21 to Saturday, 23 September in the Festsaal Fürstenhaus.

Speakers from Germany and abroad will illuminate various aspects of contemporary musical life in lectures and discussions. The conference, chaired by Prof. Dr. Martin Pfleiderer, is organised by the joint Department of Musicology Weimar-Jena of the Weimar University of Music and the FSU Jena.

Among other things, the lectures will focus on how internet platforms, streaming services and the corresponding music formats shape music consumption today. It's about songwriting camps, street music, hyperpop and "metal monsters and hard rock angels" - the title of a lecture by Jena sociologist Hartmut Rosa.

In addition, in a workshop on Saturday morning, participants can deepen their examination of the topics "Social Theory and Sociology of Music", "Ecological Sustainability and Musical Life" and "Functions and Aesthetic Dimensions of Music in Late Modernity" together with the speakers in three working groups.

The conference will focus on the manifold connections between music and late-modern society, which is currently facing a series of crises. Fundamental questions will be addressed such as: What functions, what meanings do music and music practices have for people today? How is music currently produced, mediated and consumed?

At the same time, it reflects on the effects of the emerging social and cultural transformation processes on the musical life of the present and the future: What role can music play in overcoming experiences of crisis and loss? And how could musical life look or be shaped in a sustainable society?
