Maestro Vladimir Jurowski conducts the orchestra of the Weimar Music University
The Weimar Music university is expecting a high-profile visitor from the ‘Premier League’ of conductors in December. The internationally renowned maestro Vladimir Jurowski will be guest conducting the university orchestra, and will also conduct the symphony concert on Thursday, 12 December at 7:30 pm in the Weimarhalle.
Jurowski has been General Music Director of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich since 2021 and Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra (RSB) since 2017. Until 2021, he was principal conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra for 15 years.
The exciting concert programme spans an arc from Romanticism to modernism: Anton Bruckner's buoyant ‘Nullter’ (zero) Symphony in D minor is juxtaposed with Arnold Schoenberg's expressive ‘Begleitmusik zu einer Lichtspielszene’ (scored for the cinema), op. 34.
The solo concert will feature Karol Szymanowski's fairytale-like Violin Concerto No. 1 op. 35, performed by violin student Larissa Cidlinsky, who will round off her concert exam in the Weimar class of Prof. Dr. Friedemann Eichhorn with her performance.
Admission tickets are available in advance from the Weimar Tourist Information Office and at the door for €20 (concession €15).
Vladimir Jurowski, one of today's most sought-after conductors, was born in Moscow in 1972 and completed the first part of his music studies at the Music College of the Moscow Conservatory. In 1990, he moved with his family to Germany and continued his studies at the Music university in Dresden and Berlin. In 1995, he made his international debut at the Wexford Festival and debuted at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden.
Jurowski has been chief conductor of the RSB since 2017 and has also been GMD of the Bavarian State Opera since 2021. In 2021, he stepped down from his fifteen-year tenure as principal conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra and became its conductor laureate. He is also principal artist of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.
He was previously Music Director of Glyndebourne Festival Opera (2001-2013), Artistic Director of the Russian State Academic Symphony Orchestra ( 2010-2020 ), Principal Guest Conductor of the Russian National Orchestra (2005-2009) and Artistic Director of the George Enescu International Festival in Bucharest (2017-2021). He was also First Kapellmeister at the Komische Oper Berlin (1997-2000) and Principal Guest Conductor of the Teatro Comunale di Bologna (2000-2003).
Vladimir Jurowski has worked with many of the world's most prestigious orchestras, including the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, the Cleveland and Philadelphia Orchestras, the New York Philharmonic, the Chicago and Boston Symphony Orchestras, and the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonic Orchestras.
He is a regular guest at the BBC Proms, the Musikfest Berlin and the festivals in Dresden, Lucerne, Schleswig-Holstein and Grafenegg.
