New worlds
The Collegium Musicum Weimar invites you to two concerts at the Weimar Schießhaus
The Collegium Musicum Weimar is bringing a pinch of flamenco to the Schießhaus: under the direction of conducting student and artistic director of the orchestra, P. Mauricio Sotelo-Romero, the orchestral musicians will present the programme they developed during the winter semester. The university ensemble would like to take the audience into "new worlds" on Friday, 26 January and Saturday, 27 January at 7:30 p.m. in the Schießhaus.
The evening begins with Franz Schubert's overture to his opera "Alfonso and Estrella". With its Spanish theme, it paves the way for a charming, rarely performed work: the "Concierto Andaluz" for four guitars and orchestra by Joaquín Rodrigo, which is strongly characterised by the musical structures of flamenco.
Afterwards, Antonín Dvořák's Symphony No. 9 in E minor "From the New World" takes the audience across the Atlantic: composed in 1893 during Dvořák's stay in the United States, the symphony clearly reflects the influences of American culture and folklore.
The Cantum Guitar Quartet with guitarists Danilo Kunze, Sophie Schlaubitz, Antigoni Baxe and Panagiotis Tzortziszu will perform as soloists in the concerts. The four musicians got to know each other during their studies at the Mozarteum Salzburg and the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar, where they received chamber music lessons from Prof. Thomas Müller-Pering. Since its debut in early 2022, the quartet has performed a repertoire that includes original compositions as well as transcriptions of classical orchestral works.
Tickets for the concerts are available at the tourist information centres in Weimar, Erfurt and Jena and online for 8 euros, concessions 5 euros. Remaining tickets are available at the box office.
The Collegium Musicum Weimar, founded in 1994, arose from the desire of school music students to perform demanding symphonic works in the orchestra. The direction is in the hands of students from the Department of Conducting and Opera Coaching. The musicians are primarily students of music education and musicology at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar.
The orchestra is also enriched by students from the Bauhaus University Weimar, the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, the University of Erfurt and the Leipzig University of Music as well as professional amateur musicians from all over Thuringia.
Conductor P. Mauricio Sotelo-Romero was born in San Lorenzo de El Escorial (Spain) and has been studying orchestral conducting in the class of Prof. Pasquet and Prof. Wycik at the Weimar University of Music since 2019. He previously lived in Berlin, where he received his first conducting training with Alexander Gelovani as well as violin, piano and harpsichord lessons.
He has a particular fondness for opera. In January 2022, he conducted his first opera performance of Mozart's "Così fan tutte" at the Landestheater Coburg. He has also gained experience as a violinist in chamber music and orchestral playing, for example as concertmaster of the "Jugendensemble für Neue Musik Berlin" in 2017 and 2018.
