Violinist Nora Chastain and cellist Troels Svane give a concert at the Weimar Master Classes
Violinist Nora Chastain and cellist Troels Svane have long been regular guests at the Weimar Master Classes, where they are always keen to make an artistic appearance themselves. In the series ‘Master and Master in Concert’, the duo will now perform on Wednesday, 24 July at 7:30 p.m. in the Festsaal Fürstenhaus.
The guest professors will be accompanied by the Japanese pianists Yukako Morikawa and Yoko Kuwahara. Tickets are available from the Tourist Information Centre in Weimar and at the box office for 20 euros, concessions 15 euros.
The programme opens with Rebecca Clarke's Violin Sonata, composed in 1919 and considered a milestone of 20th-century chamber music. The work captivates with its blend of impressionistic tone colours, lyrical melancholy and passionate drama.
This ‘Nordic’ sonata is contrasted with Joaquín Turina's ‘Sonata Española’. Characteristic Spanish dance rhythms and folk melodies make the work a lively and colourful musical experience.
After the interval, the audience can look forward to Robert Schumann's Piano Trio No. 2 in F major, op. 80. Schumann's wife Clara was particularly enthusiastic about this work in 1849: ‘It is one of Robert's pieces that warms and delights me from beginning to end. I love it passionately and want to play it again and again.’
The violinist Nora Chastain was born in California and studied at the Cincinnati Conservatory and the Juilliard School in New York. Since her solo debut with Barber's Violin Concerto, which she gave in Berlin at the age of 16, she has been a guest on renowned concert stages at home and abroad. She is a professor of violin at the University of the Arts in Berlin and at the Zurich University of the Arts.
Troels Svane studied with David Geringas at the Music university in Lübeck. At the age of 18, he became deputy principal cellist of the Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra. In addition to receiving numerous scholarships, he has won national and international prizes. In 2004, he was appointed professor of cello at the Music university in Lübeck. He also has a cello class at the University of Music ‘Hanns Eisler’ Berlin.
