Workshop and lecture-concert on Walther von Goethe
Composer of the inner self, writer with a social ethos and cultural politician in Weimar's Silver Age – all this and much more was the eldest grandson of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. As part of an interdisciplinary artistic and scientific research project on the work and life of Walther von Goethe, the third workshop of the partners involved will take place in Weimar from 21 to 25 June. Workshops funded by the European Erasmus programme have already taken place in Frankfurt am Main (January 2024) and Graz (April 2024).
The project, initiated by Prof. Dr. Ulf Bästlein, is a collaboration between the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar, the Klassik Stiftung Weimar, the University of Music and Performing Arts Frankfurt am Main, the Freies Deutsches Hochstift, the Goethe Museum Düsseldorf and the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
Joint teaching events at the three participating universities offer students of singing and piano from Siena, L'Aquila, Bologna, San Sebastian, Porto, Helsinki, Graz, Frankfurt and Weimar the opportunity to study and analyse unknown manuscripts by Walther von Goethe – a student of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Carl Loewe.
The young artists will be able to familiarise themselves with the fascinating songs, arias and ballads of a little-known, often neglected contemporary of Schumann, Liszt and Wagner, and gain exciting insights into their origins. These works and the results of the joint research will then be presented in a public discussion concert on Tuesday, 25 June at 7:30 p.m. in the Fürstenhaus festival hall. Admission to the lecture concert as part of the ‘Liedtage XV’ at the Weimar Music university is free!
The concert is preceded by intensive source study and creative-artistic work in team teaching events with Prof. Dr. Ulf Bästlein (University of Music and Performing Arts Graz), Prof. Christoph Ritter (University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar), Hedayet Jonas Djeddikar (University of Music and Performing Arts Frankfurt am Main) and Dr. Ariane Ludwig (Weimar Classic Foundation).
The main topics of the Weimar workshop are the (musical) culture of the Goethe era and the Silver Age of Weimar as central epochs of European cultural history – building on the previous workshops, which focused on the Goethe family history, manuscript studies, methods of ‘artistic research’ and historically informed performance practice.
The programme includes a lecture by Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Peter Gülke, visits to the Goethe and Liszt houses, the Goethe and Schiller Archives and the Herderkirche, guided tours of the city and Ilm Park, and work with original manuscripts in the Goethe and Schiller Archives.
