A Weekend of Music
At the Weimar Master Classes, guest professors and participants take the stage
Over the weekend, the 66th Weimar Master Classes will showcase their full musical diversity in five concerts. The participants will take the stage for three performances: A cello course concert on Friday, July 31, at 4:00 p.m. at the Forum Seebach will be followed on Friday evening by the first “Meisterhaft” concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Festsaal Fürstenhaus—featuring a colorful cross-section of works from the violin, cello, and piano courses led by Nora Chastain, Wen-Sinn Yang, and Imre Rohmann. The program will feature chamber music and solo repertoire by composers including Joseph Haydn, Johannes Brahms, and Sergei Rachmaninoff.
A piano course concert is scheduled for Saturday, August 1, at 4:00 p.m. at the Forum Seebach, before the renowned violinist Tanja Becker-Bender takes the stage as the “Master in Concert” on Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m. in the Festsaal Fürstenhaus. She is dedicating her concert to the 100th birthday of composer György Kurtág and skillfully weaves his works into a program featuring pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach, Franz Schubert, and George Enescu. Sofya Melikyan will accompany her on the concert grand piano.
Another “Master in Concert” will make her master class debut on Sunday, August 2, also at 7:30 p.m. in the Festsaal Fürstenhaus: Flutist and former Weimar professor Anna Garzuly Wahlgren will showcase all the facets of her instrument with works ranging from Bach to Beethoven—at times delicate and heartfelt, at other times virtuosic and passionate. The program includes Beethoven’s Serenade in D Major for Flute and Piano, Op. 41; Richard Wagner’s Romance, WWV 94; and Wilhelm Friedemann Bach’s Sonata in E-flat Minor for Flute and Basso Continuo. Anna Garzuly-Wahlgren’s piano partner is Sophio Gigineishvili.
Tickets are available at the Weimar Tourist Information Office and at the box office. Admission to the course concerts at the Forum Seebach is free.
