Festive finale
Jazz students give a total of eleven exam concerts at Mascha Weimar
This semester, the Department of New and Jazz Music has combined a total of eleven final concerts by Bachelor's and Master's students into a compact little jazz festival. From 1 to 17 June, the Mascha Weimar is the location for six evenings to showcase the full diversity and range of jazz education in Weimar in a cosy atmosphere. Admission to all concerts is free.
The exciting ‘Jazz Sessions’ will kick off with the Alex Rueß Trio on Sunday, 1 June at 8 p.m. at Mascha Weimar. The band led by jazz guitarist Alexander Rueß combines driving grooves with intimate melodies. The band draws inspiration from the music of jazz guitar icons such as Bill Frisell and Pat Metheny, as well as from American bluegrass.
The series continues on 1 June at 9:45 p.m. with the Max Enyedi Quartet: drummer Max Enyedi and his ensemble move in the field of tension between jazz and popular music.
The following evening, 2 June, at 8 p.m., a larger combo will take to the stage at Mascha with ‘Overlap’. This project by trumpeter Tadeo Fisser blends styles, musical cultures and soundscapes, including congas and marimba.
This will be followed at 9:45 p.m. by the Chia-Hsiang Wang Quartet, named after the guitar student whose creative compositions will be performed. The stylistic spectrum ranges from modern interpretations of Taiwanese melodies to compositions inspired by Olivier Messiaen.
Under the motto ‘Just Jazz’, saxophonist Qun Yin and his quartet will present a programme of mainly their own works in traditional jazz style on Tuesday, 3 June at 8 p.m. As a special highlight, he will play a piece he wrote himself with Chinese influences.
This will be followed at 9:45 p.m. by the Andriy Dulysh Quintet with its hard groove reminiscent of prog rock. The band's fresh concept embodies a reinterpretation of the encounter between jazz and rock.
A week later, on 10 June at 7 p.m., jazz singer Marie Seferian will perform at Mascha. Entitled ‘Three wishes’, her programme is inspired by the stories surrounding Pannonica de Koenigswater, a muse and supporter of the New York jazz scene in the 1950s to 1980s.
At 8:45 p.m., her fellow student Nola Fuchs takes to the stage, using her voice and effects to transport the audience to worlds where she makes audible and visible what was previously only felt.
After concerts by saxophonist Danil Sulaiev and clarinettist Maximilian Landsberg on 16 June, the ‘Jazz Sessions’ will culminate in a performance by the ‘Famous Guitar Ensemble’ on Tuesday, 17 June at 8 p.m. at Mascha Weimar.
The bachelor's students in the electric guitar class will present the results of their exploration of the music of bassist Marc Johnson's group Bass Desires. This formation was considered one of the most exciting jazz groups of the late 1980s and was not only popular among fans of electric guitar music.
