Applications for the Weimar Master Classes in July and August are now being accepted
The FRANZ LISZT University of Music is once again inviting participants to its internationally renowned Weimar Master Classes in July and August. For the 66th time, renowned artists and educators will come to Weimar to give young talents from all over the world important impetus for their further artistic development in intensive one-to-one lessons. From July 24 to August 8, there will be rehearsals, fine-tuning, practice – and also public performances.
Online registration is now open until May 15 at www.hfm-weimar.de/weimar-master-classes.
Anyone between the ages of 18 and 35 can apply to participate. A total of twelve guest professors will teach the young musicians in the subjects of composition, violin, cello, piano, flute, and tuba (with brass chamber music). After a preliminary selection via video, around 100 participants are expected to attend the courses. Please note: For organizational reasons, applications for the composition course have been brought forward: The participants have already been selected.
A unique feature of the Weimar Master Classes is once again the popular orchestra studio with the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra. Selected course participants have the opportunity to work as soloists with a multi-award-winning orchestra under the baton of experienced conductor Markus L. Frank.
Almost every evening, some of the teachers and most of the participants can also be heard in public concerts. All courses are open to the public and can be attended with day tickets.
As a special highlight, the university, together with the German Academy Rome Villa Massimo, is welcoming four Rome Prize winners as guest professors in composition this summer: Malika Kishino, Fabien Lévy, Sina Fani Sani, and Hans Thomalla will give a three-day master class. As part of the city-wide event “Wo die Zitronen glüh'n – Villa Massimo zu Gast in Weimar” (Where the Lemons Glow – Villa Massimo Visits Weimar) (July 23-26), there will also be three concerts featuring works by the Rome Prize winners and their course participants.
In the violin department, there will be a reunion with the renowned violinist and experienced teacher Nora Chastain, who has already taught several master classes with her expertise. Also returning to Weimar is the accomplished violinist Tanja Becker-Bender, who has made a name for herself as a soloist, chamber musician, and professor.
The cello department is equally prominent this year with two prominent figures: cellists Wen-Sinn Yang and Troels Svane have performed worldwide as soloists under renowned conductors – and both have many years of teaching experience at Music universities.
The woodwind instruments will be represented by former Weimar flute professor Anna Garzuly-Wahlgren, who has since taken up a full professorship in Leipzig. She is an internationally sought-after musician, both as former principal flutist of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and with her flute ensemble “Quintessenz.”
The newly appointed Weimar tuba professor Dirk Hirthe, long-time tuba player with the Badische Staatskapelle, who also teaches brass chamber music as his speciality, will be making his debut at the Weimar Master Classes.
As is tradition, there will again be two courses in piano. Returning to Weimar is keyboard artist Lilya Zilberstein, who has performed with some of the most renowned orchestras and conductors and teaches as a professor in Vienna. Another piano course will be offered by Hungarian Imre Rohmann, who, in addition to his international concert activities as a soloist and chamber musician, taught for many years as a professor at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg.
