The University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar welcomes 197 new students from all over the world
The university is very happy about the ‘freshers’: the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar welcomes 221 new students for the winter semester 2024/2025. They were formally enrolled with a lot of music at the Festsaal Fürstenhaus on Monday, 7 October.
They were welcomed by Prof. Juan M.V. Garcia, Vice President for Artistic Practice and Research, and Arild Hansen, Chair of the Student Council. This means that a total of 836 young musicians, music educators and musicologists are currently studying in the European City of Culture.
Of the 221 new students, 197 are enrolling in Weimar for the first time – the others are switching from a bachelor's to a master's programme, for example. The 197 first-year students are divided into 79 German and 118 international students. They come to Weimar from all over the world – including from all regions of Asia, South and North America, and many European countries.
The largest increases this time were recorded by the Department of Musicology Weimar-Jena (with Arts Management), with a total of 47, the Department of Wind Instruments and Percussion, with 38, and the Department of Music Education and Church Music, with 23 new students. The Department of String Instruments and Harp follows with 25, the Department of New Music and Jazz with 20, the Department of Singing | Music Theatre with 12 – and the Department of Piano with 10 new students.
A total of 27 students in mobility programmes (e.g. Erasmus+) come to the Music university in Weimar from all over Europe.
At the matriculation ceremony at 6 p.m. in the Festsaal Fürstenhaus, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD Prize) was presented to conducting student David Fernández Caravaca from Prof. Ekhart Wycik's class. He received the certificate from Dr Jens Ewen, Vice President for Digitisation and Internationalisation and Ly Tran, Director of the International Office. The honoured student gave a digital thank you with an excerpt from a concert with the chamber choir in Córdoba in March of this year.
During the event, the Franz Liszt Prize was awarded for the first time to two recipients. Ulrike Rynkowski-Neuhof, chair of the Friends of the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar association, presented the prize for outstanding artistic achievements and exemplary social engagement to school music student Stefanie Dzjubak and guitar student Danylo Denysov, a student of Prof. Ricardo Jesus Gallén Garcia.
