Ten ensembles in the second round of the JOSEPH JOACHIM Chamber Music Competition

Ten ensembles have made it to the second round of the 10th International JOSEPH JOACHIM Chamber Music Competition. The piano trios and string quartets come from Hungary, Italy, Great Britain, Austria and Germany. A total of 23 ensembles travelled to the competition, which is taking place from 30 March to 5 April 2025 in the Festsaal Fürstenhaus at the Music university in Weimar.

The second round will take place on Wednesday 2 April and Thursday 3 April, both starting at 11:00 a.m. in the Festsaal Fürstenhaus. Admission is free – and the competition can also be followed in the second round via livestream at www.hfm-weimar.de and on the university's YouTube channel.

The finals on 4 and 5 April, starting at 11:00 a.m., will already have the character of a concert with approximately 90-minute performances by the ensembles in the festival hall. Admission costs 4 euros.

The winning ensembles will finally play at the festive prize winners' concert and award ceremony on Saturday, 5 April at 7:30 p.m. in the Festsaal Fürstenhaus. Tickets are available for €15 (concession €10) from the Weimar Tourist Information Office and at the door.

The best ensembles can look forward to prizes worth a total of more than €20,000, with the main prize being €10,000. In addition to the prizes and several special prizes, the ensembles will receive international recognition and valuable networking opportunities.

A diverse repertoire is required, ranging from classical to romantic and contemporary works. The international jury, chaired by the President of the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar and violinist Anne-Kathrin Lindig, consists of experienced musicians and educators.

The competition honours the legacy of the great violinist and composer Joseph Joachim by promoting artistic excellence in chamber music. It is a member of the ‘World Federation of International Music Competitions’.

The international competition is named after the violinist, conductor and composer Joseph Joachim (1831-1907), who, during his time as concertmaster of the Weimar Hofkapelle, was part of Franz Liszt's inner circle. As one of the most important chamber musicians of the late 19th century, Joachim played in the legendary piano trio of Liszt, Joachim and Cossmann.
