Christmas – Open the Gates
Advent concerts by the chamber choir in Berlin, Potsdam, Annaberg-Buchholz and Weimar
Traditionally, the excellent chamber choir of the University of Music FRANZ LISZT goes on a concert tour during the Advent season. This year, a total of six concerts are planned with the programme ‘Christmas – Open the Gates’.
The approximately 50 young singers of the renowned and internationally award-winning student ensemble will perform baroque and contemporary pre-Christmas choral music. The choir is directed by Jürgen Puschbeck, a professor of choral conducting from Weimar.
The ensemble will kick off its tour with a performance at 5 p.m. on Sunday, 1 December, at the St. Annenkirche in Annaberg-Buchholz. Four further concerts will then take place in Berlin and Potsdam: at the Church of the Twelve Apostles in Berlin (13 December, 7 p.m.), the Hermannswerder Island Church in Potsdam (14 December, 3 :30 p.m.), the Church of the Christian Community in Berlin-Wilmersdorf (14 December, 7:30 p.m.) and the French Church in Potsdam (15 December, 2:00 p.m.).
As every year, the Chamber Choir will conclude its small tour with an Advent concert on Thursday, 19 December at 7:30 p.m. in the Herz-Jesu-Kirche in Weimar.
In addition to pre-Christmas choral music from the Baroque and modern eras, the programme also includes arrangements of German and international Advent and Christmas carols that students have prepared themselves in rehearsals and will conduct in the concerts.
The programme includes, among others, ‘Macht die Tore weit’ by Heinrich Schütz, ‘O magnum Mysterium’ by Javier Busto and ‘Vom Himmel hoch’ by Michael Praetorius. In addition to many others, the international songs ‘Southern Cross’ (Australia), ‘Koppangen’ (Sweden) and ‘The Coventry Carol’ (England) can be experienced.
The ‘Ligeia Consort’ will also be performing with the recorder players Lena Heilmann, Franziska Trommer and Mieneke Büker, enriching the varied programme with instrumental timbres. Admission to all concerts is free.
