Farewell to the founder
SchuMu Big Band performs for the last time under the direction of Prof. Gero Schmidt-Oberländer
It will be his farewell concert: Gero Schmidt-Oberländer, professor of practical piano playing in schools, founded the SchuMu Big Band in 1998 and has accompanied it through countless projects and tours ever since. The big band of the Department of Music Education and Church Music at the Weimar Music University will now perform for the last time under his direction on Monday, February 9, at 7:30 p.m. at the “mon ami” youth and cultural center. Prof. Gero Schmidt-Oberländer's successor will be Schupra Professor Cornelius Mack.
The varied program includes big band classics from the swing era, groovy Latin numbers, and songs arranged especially for the band. The program includes “Misty,” “Chattanooga Choo Choo,” “Sister Sadie,” “Martinique,” “Birdland,” and many other songs.
The SchuMu Big Band will be energetically supported vocally and sonically by the vocal ensemble “Die Katze im Sack” under the direction of Martin Lorenz and the Latin ensemble “Sandunguera” under the direction of Prof. Clemens Tiburtius. The Latin ensemble will bring the evening to a close on the dance floor at mon ami.
The audience particularly praises the SchuMu Big Band's enthusiasm, which is transmitted to the auditorium. The band consists almost exclusively of teacher training students. Artistic highlights of recent years have included performances at the International Accordion Competition in Klingenthal with award-winning accordionist Daniel Roth, at the Old Town Festival in Weimar's twin city of Trier in front of more than 2,000 listeners, and a concert tour to Luxembourg. The SchuMu Big Band is also a regular guest at IG Jazz in Arnstadt.
