Advent concert of the Music High School Schloss Belvedere in the Herderkirche

The Centre for the Highly Gifted at the Music university in Weimar invites you to its traditional Advent concert on Sunday, 15 December at 5 p.m. in the city church of St. Peter and Paul (Herderkirche). The enchanting programme, with timbres ranging from the choir to the wind ensemble to the large orchestra, includes works from several centuries – from early Baroque to modern.

The concert of the Music High School Schloss Belvedere is a charity event in aid of the SOS Kinderdorf e.V. as part of the UNESCO project school's work.

The concert will begin with the choir of the Music High School, conducted by Marian Grosew, singing ‘Machet die Tore weit’ by Andreas Hammerschmidt, as well as the Advent songs ‘Maria durch ein Dornwald ging’ and ‘Es kommt ein Schiff geladen’. Valentina Stephan is the soloist in the following oboe concerto by Alessandro Marcello, accompanied by the Music High School's orchestra.

Johann Sebastian Bach's Concerto for Two Violins BWV 1043 requires two soloists: violinists Marie-Luise Lange and Marie Mrosek.

Christian Sprenger, professor of trombone in Weimar, then provides a change of timbre with his arrangement: Enrique Crespo's ‘Etude in the Style of Bruckner for Low Brass’ is played by a brass septet from the Music High School with six trombones and a tuba.

Finally, Engelbert Humperdinck's concert overture to the opera ‘Königskinder’ (The King's Children) by the orchestra of the Music High School, conducted by Joan Pagès Valls, creates a romantic mood before the choir and orchestra come together in Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's choral cantata on Luther's ‘Vom Himmel hoch’ (From Heaven Above) and César Franck's ‘Psalm 150’.
