Majestic melodies

The university orchestra plays works of the late romantic and modern periods in the Weimarhalle

The University Orchestra offers a sonically delightful program in its next concert. From dreamy fantasies of Debussy to the powerful drama of Shostakovich to the majestic melodies of Sibelius, the spectrum ranges in the symphony concert on Thursday, June 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the Weimarhalle. The soloist will be violinist Yuna Ha, with Prof. Nicolás Pasquet conducting the university orchestra.

The concert will feature works from the late Romantic and modern periods: Claude Debussy's "Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune" will be followed by Dmitri Shostakovich's Concerto for Violin and Orchestra No. 1 in A minor, op. 77. After the intermission, Jean Sibelius' Symphony No. 1 in E minor, op. 39 will be on the program.

Tickets at 20 euros, reduced 15 euros, are available at the Tourist Information Weimar and at the box office.

Debussy's "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun," first performed in 1894, is based on the poem of the same name by Stéphane Mallarmé. The French composer uses a wide range of colors and textures to capture the poem's sensuous atmosphere. The flowing melodies, delicate harp interludes, and impressionistic harmonies give the work a dreamy and lyrical quality.

Shostakovich's first violin concerto is a powerful and virtuosic work, suffused with somber sounds and dramatic contrasts. It is a haunting expression of the composer's personal experiences and suffering during a time of political repression. It was not premiered until 1955, after Stalin's death.

About half a century earlier, Jean Sibelius composed his first symphony, inspired by Finnish folk music and impressions of nature, which - like all his works - builds deep emotional tension.

With her performance, violin student Yuna Ha, as soloist of the concert, completes an important part of her postgraduate studies for the concert exam in the class of Prof. Dr. Friedemann Eichhorn. She has already won 1st prizes at international violin competitions and made guest appearances with various orchestras in Europe and Asia.

She is also passionate about chamber music: as a founding member of the Esme Quartet, she was awarded 1st prize at the London Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition.
