Prof. Anna Garzuly-Wahlgren

The Hungarian flautist Anna Garzuly-Wahlgren began flute lessons at the age of nine, and later attended the conservatoire in her hometown of Szombathely. She subsequently studied at the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest, under Lóránt Kovács (and also studied chamber music under György Kurtág) and at Munich’s University of Music under Paul Meisen, where she obtained her Artistic Diploma and her Masterclass Diploma. Simultaneously, she studied for a ‘Master of Music in Performance Major’ under Jeanne Baxtresser at the Manhattan School of Music in New York, where she completed this degree with distinction.

Anna Garzuly-Wahlgren has won several prizes at international flute competitions, even during her studies, for example in Geneva, Kobe, Scheveningen, Budapest and Markneukirchen. She was a member of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra under Claudio Abbado and was awarded the Talent Award of the city of Ingolstadt.

She has received numerous scholarships, from Georg Soros, the Rotary Club of Munich and the Hungarian State Eötvös scholarship, among others. She won the East & West Artists competition in 1995 and, in the same year, she became the second solo flautist of the Gewandhausorchester in Leipzig, and took on the role of temporary solo flautist from 2008 to 2017.

Anna Garzuly-Wahlgren is active as a soloist and chamber musician. She has played solo concerts with the Gewandhausorchester under Riccardo Chailly and Herbert Blomsteft, the Neues Bachisches Collegium Musicum and the Leipzig Chamber Orchester.

She has undertaken chamber music projects and recordings with the Sabine Meyer Ensemble and the Linos Ensemble, she has played a piano duet with Imre Rohman, and has performed with the Gewandhausoktett and the ‘armonia’ wind ensemble. She is a co-founder of the Leipzig-based flute ensemble ‘Quintessenz’, which celebrated its 20-year anniversary in 2016. In addition, she can be heard on numerous prize-winning recordings of orchestral pieces and chamber music.

Alongside her artistic work, Anna Garzuly-Wahlgren is an active, passionate teacher. She regularly gives masterclasses in Europe and Asia, was a long-standing mentor for the Mendelssohn Orchestra Academy at the Leipzig Gewandhaus and has been in charge of preparations for ‘Jugend Musiziert’ in Leipzig for years.

She has been Professor of Chamber Music for Wind Instruments at the Leipzig University of Music since 2017 and was appointed as Professor of Flute at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar in 2019.
