Lecture and lots of music

The University invites you to the Festsaal Fürstenhaus on Franz Liszt's 213th birthday

Together with the German Liszt Society, the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar is organising a festive event in honour of its namesake Franz Liszt. On his 213th birthday, Tuesday, 22 October at 7:30 pm in the Festsaal Fürstenhaus, there will be music from award-winning students of the university as well as a lecture.

Irene Schwalb from the German Music Council will speak about the topic ‘Competitions – the pros and cons in an artistic career’ – fittingly, at the same time as the 11th International FRANZ LISZT Piano Competition Weimar – Bayreuth begins.

Accordion student Mihail Cunetchi (Prof. Claudia Buder's class) will open the evening with a musical performance. He will perform the piece ‘Balgkann’ for solo accordion by Uroš Rojko, who was a guest professor at the Weimar Master Classes this summer.

After a welcome address by university president Prof. Anne-Kathrin Lindig, there will be a performance of the Fantasie in F minor op. 49 by Frédéric Chopin, played by Deren Wang from the Weimar piano class of Prof. Christian Wilm Müller.

Deren Wang won 1st prize, the Beethoven Sonata Prize and the Piano Concerto Prize at the 7th International Svetislav Stancic Piano Competition 2023. She also won 3rd prize at the 65th International Premio Jaén Piano Competition 2024.

Following the keynote lecture by Irene Schwalb, two works for cello will be performed. Alexandra Kahrer, a student of Prof. Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt, will play ‘Calypso’ for solo cello by Georgy Gusev, before moving on to the Hungarian Rhapsody op. 68 by David Popper.

Alexandra Kahrer has already won many prizes at international competitions such as the Gustav Mahler Cello Competition in the Czech Republic (1st prize), the Leoš Janáček Competition in Brno (3rd prize), the David Popper Cello Competition in Hungary (2nd prize) and the Cello Competition in Liezen (1st prize).

From 2016 to 2020, she studied with Prof. Wen-Sinn Yang at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich before moving to the class of Prof. Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar.

Admission to the ceremony is free!
