‘Living Bach’ and ’Pärt Feeling’

Four music films as part of the Weimar Master Classes at the Kommunales Kino mon ami

The thematic range extends from the Baroque to the present day: as part of the 64th Weimar Master Classes, the Kommunale Kino mon ami is showing a total of four music films that accompany the course and concert programme of the international master classes at the Weimar Music university. The first film, ‘Das Arvo Pärt Gefühl – That Pärt Feeling’, will be shown on Monday, 22 July at 9 p.m. and follows the Estonian composer.

Arvo Pärt is considered something of a recluse. However, at work he seems to be the exact opposite, combining his sensitivity with humour and energy. His intensive collaboration with the Cello-Oktett Amsterdam is the centrepiece of this documentary.

The programme continues on Thursday, 25 July at 9 p.m. with the documentary ‘Living Bach’, which looks at the work of choirs and ensembles around the world that are dedicated to the music of Johann Sebastian Bach.

Whether as a hobby, a profession or a passion, the more than 300 Bach choirs and ensembles worldwide are united across a wide range of cultures. Anna Schmidt's documentary film ‘Living Bach’ takes us on a musical journey and tells the story of these enthusiasts, travelling through six continents and showing extraordinary, exciting and life-changing relationships with Bach's incomparable music.

The following week, the music film ‘Rickerl – Musik is höchstens a Hobby’ will be shown on Monday, 29 July at 9:00 p.m. The film centres on the idealist Erich ‘Rickerl’ Bohacek. During the day, the pubs in Vienna's working-class district are his living room, and in the evening they are his stage.

He just about manages to make ends meet as a street musician and bar musician, but it's not enough to make any big leaps. So he also has to keep his head above water with casual jobs on the side. The dream of his first record has to wait. But when the musician's air gets tight, suddenly paths open up that seem to indicate the right direction.

The music film series will conclude on Tuesday, 30 July at 9 p.m. with the film ‘Back to Black’ about the musician Amy Winehouse. She grew up in a loving but dysfunctional Jewish family in the London district of Southgate.

Amy was discovered at a gig in a local pub. The record label seemed to be waiting for her, and with it, great freedom. As her career took off, so did the pressure and the drugs – and her rebellious free spirit and unique voice were accompanied by a bittersweet, rather tragic note.

Tickets are available at the cinema box office for €7 each, or €5 for concessions.
