The first weekend of the Weimar Master Classes with the first courses and concerts

A total of 180 applications from all over the world were received for the nine different masterclasses. Following a preliminary selection, 92 participants are now expected to take an active part in the 64th Weimar Master Classes from 20 July to 3 August at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar. They come from 23 countries around the globe, from Australia to Canada and from South Korea to South Africa. The USA is particularly well represented this year, with 15 participants.

The violin course with Lucie Robert and the piano course with Jeffrey Cohen are among the first courses to be offered this year, starting on 21 July. The artists will perform as a duo at the opening concert on Saturday, 20 July at 7:30 p.m. in the Festsaal Fürstenhaus

Robert and Cohen have both been teaching at the renowned Manhattan School of Music for around three decades. In Weimar, the American-Canadian duo will interpret not only (late) Romantic violin sonatas by Brahms and Strauss, but also Leoš Janáček's sonata, composed in 1914: written on the eve of the First World War, the work captures the tensions and emotions of this turbulent era.

The courses of accordionist Luka Juhart and clarinettist Uroš Rojko, which depart from the classical programme with elements of improvisation and composition, also start on the first weekend. Both courses are designed as a modular system: the participants decide on the content and joint group lessons are also encouraged.

The guest professors will be appearing in person as "Masters in Concert" on Sunday, 21 July at 7:30 pm in the Fürstenhaus ballroom. They will be playing exclusively their own works, including two world premieres, "Bridging" and "Auslaufen der Zeit II".

Tickets for the concerts are available from the Weimar Tourist Information Centre and at the box office for €20 (€15 concessions).

Interested guests are warmly welcome to attend the masterclasses. You can purchase both day tickets and multi-day tickets from the organisation office in the Fürstenhaus.
